The Best and Worst Industries of the Next Decade

A new analysis predicts which industries will experience the best and worst revenue growth over the next ten years.

Entrepreneurs have enough to worry about with managing their companies’ daily operations, but what if in the next decade, your entire industry is, as the British say, made redundant? A new report by the market research analysis firm IBISWorld, projects a long-term look at which 10 industries will be the strongest and the weakest.

Voice over internet protocol providers top IBIS’ best industries list followed closely by retirement / pension plans, and biotechnology. The top fields fading from the spotlight are wired telecommunications carriers, tank and armored vehicle manufacturing, and small household appliance manufacturing. In total, the company tracks over 700 industries.

While analysts can gather data on a company or industry’s sensitivities such as whom they buy from and whom they sell to, some threats to your livelihood are beyond even the strongest predictive powers. “Over long periods of time, the competitor that might be the most difficult is the one that creeps up from a completely different industry or possibly even a completely different country as we’ve seen with foreign trade and outsourcing,” says George Van Horn, a senior analyst at IBISWorld. For example, VoIP went from a non-existent field at the start of the past decade to holding the prime slot looking towards the future.

On the plus side, while there is no such thing as a perfect crystal ball, Van Horn asserts that the size of an entrepreneur’s current or future business should be no impediment to capitalizing on these trends. He says if an entrepreneur is flush with ideas but not with capital, “one of the things that they might consider is looking at where all the capital flows are going in these new technologies and then find a way to provide services to that growing industry,” Van Horn counsels.

However, the glut of opportunity doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to make a switch into a new and unfamiliar industry. “There are a lot of reasons to make [career and industry] switches these days and it really should encompass a little bit of” both your fiscal and personal situation, says Stacey Mayo, an independent career and small business coach.

She advises those venturesome enough to explore unfamiliar territory to shadow, interview or apprentice themselves to a number of experts in their new field to get a diversity of opinion on the state of the industry. A common problem is that entrepreneurs drag their feet about completing the jump. Mayo says, “People make the mistake of waiting until they feel they know everything and have it all perfectly lined up and that’s not possible.”

That thump you heard in the middle of the night, was the 376-page National Broadband Plan finally being dropped (you can get your very own copy or just scan through the executive summary here).

Not pulling any political punches, broadband is compared to electricity in the conclusion to the report crafted by Federal Communications Chairman Julius Genachowski and his team. It reads:

In 1938, President Roosevelt traveled to Gordon Military College in Barnesville, Georgia, to speak at the dedication of a local utility. “Electricity is a modern necessity of life, not a luxury,” the President told the audience, “That necessity ought to be found in every village, in every home and on every farm in every part of the wide United States.”

He added, “Six years ago, in 1932, there was such talk about the more widespread and the cheaper use of electricity.” But words did not matter until the country, “reduced that talk to practical results.” Broadband, too, is a modern necessity of life, not a luxury. It ought to be found in every village, in every home and on every farm in every part of the United States.

It’s a showy finale to a document that is likely to be pulled apart and put back together by Congress. But it’s also correct.

For those of us who have gotten used to broadband, the comparison to electricity is apt. No matter how pokey the speeds here in the United States (most broadband connections via cable and DSL are in the range 3 to 4 megabits per second) once broadband is part of your life it’s unthinkable to do without it.

Yet, primarily because of cost, according to studies, 35% of U.S. households are without a broadband connection. In the plan, which was mandated as part of the federal stimulus plan, the FCC seeks to bring 100-megabit-per-second access to 100 million homes by 2020, and even faster connections to libraries and schools.

While being able to stream Netflix movies faster is an appealing idea, it’s the future of work that is the reason why increasing broadband speed and adoption are necessary. At last summer’s Brainstorm Tech conference, one of the big themes that was discussed by the CIOs and CTOs of some of the nation’s largest companies was the changing nature of work and our relationships to organizations. Xerox (XRX) CTO Sophie Vandebroek believes that in the future most of us will be attached to companies as contractors, working where we please. Maynard Webb, CEO of LiveOps, is building a business on that premise, running virtual call centers with thousands of contractors working when and where they please.

Broadband is vital to that kind of economy, and the kind of desirable work that increasingly involves moving bits back and forth, rather than physical goods. It’s going to be hard to get to the future that the FCC envisions. Those that own the spectrum required to boost speeds,  should be compensated for it. Opening up the pipes of carriers so that competitors can offer broadband service will be a tough sell but probably necessary.

The biggest technology trends, including cloud computing and mobile Internet, already assume broadband connections. Other parts of the world are far ahead of the U.S. in broadband adoption and speed,  especially in Asia, which happens to have the most dynamic economies in the world. Coincidence? Hardly. The U.S is playing catch-up in this tech arena. Today started the clock ticking on crafting a solution to our broadband woes. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long to get resolved. Our jobs increasingly depend on it.

  • Economic opportunity. Broadband can expand access to jobs and training, support entrepreneurship and small business growth and strengthen community development efforts. The plan includes recommendations to:
    • Support broadband choice and small businesses’ use of broadband services and applications to drive job creation, growth and productivity gains.
    • Expand opportunities for job training and placement through an online platform.
    • Integrate broadband assessment and planning into economic development efforts.

As Data Flows In, the Dollars Flow Out

John Anderson and Sharon Rapoport estimate they spend $400 a month, or close to $5,000 a year, keeping their family of four entertained at home.

There are the $30-a-month data plans on their BlackBerry Tour cellphones. The Roanoke, Va., couple’s teenage sons, Seth and Isaac, each have $50 subscriptions for Xbox Live and send thousands of texts each month on their cellphones, requiring their own data plans.

DirecTV satellite service, high-speed Internet access and Netflix for movie nights add more.

“We try to be aware of it so it doesn’t get out of control,” said Mr. Anderson, who with his wife founded an advertising agency. “But, yeah, I would say we’re pretty wired.”

It used to be that a basic $25-a-month phone bill was your main telecommunications expense. But by 2004, the average American spent $770.95 annually on services like cable television, Internet connectivity and video games, according to data from the Census Bureau. By 2008, that number rose to $903, outstripping inflation. By the end of this year, it is expected to have grown to $997.07. Add another $1,000 or more for cellphone service and the average family is spending as much on entertainment over devices as they are on dining out or buying gasoline.

And those government figures do not take into account movies, music and television shows bought through iTunes, or the data plans that are increasingly mandatory for more sophisticated smartphones.

For many people, the subscriptions and services for entertainment and communications, which are more often now one and the same, have become indispensable necessities of life, on par with electricity, water and groceries. And for every new device, there seems to be yet another fee. Buyers of the more advanced Apple iPad, to cite the latest example, can buy unlimited data access for $30 a month from AT&T even if they already have a data plan from the carrier.

“You don’t really lump these expenses into a discretionary category,” said Robert H. Frank, an economics professor at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. “As the expectation of connectedness increases, it’s what is expected for people to be functional in society.”

Americans are transforming their homes into entertainment hubs, which is driving up the amount of money they spend, said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

“More people are creating experiences in their homes that are very similar to the kinds of public experiences they enjoy in movie theaters and concert halls,” he said. “Our homes are bristling with technology.”

Most people think home entertainment is cheaper. “Every time I want to go to Fenway Park or see the Killers in concert, I’m paying $50 to $100 each time. But once you build and install that home system, its basically pennies per minute of enjoyment,” said James McQuivey, an analyst with Forrester Research.

But they do not take into consideration the long-term economic effect — both in the maintenance and operational costs — of the devices they purchase. “A subscription model is the perfect drug,” Mr. McQuivey said. “People see $15 per month as a very low amount of money but it quickly adds up.”

Kate Goodall, for example, a 32-year-old director of fund-raising for museums, in Alexandria, Va., said the high costs of home cable and other subscriptions began to eat into her budget. “We saw the writing on the wall in terms of the cost,” she said. “It was getting ridiculous.”

She and her husband disconnected their cable and home phone line so they could more easily afford frequent dinners out and swimming, ballet and art lessons for their two small sons. Instead, they catch shows like “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” free at Hulu.com and rely on their cellphones as their primary phone lines.

Her husband, Mike Hughes, 37, a project manager, has both an Xbox and a Wii game console, but, in an effort to keep their bills down, she would not let him sign up for any gaming subscription services.

Consumers will have to make tough choices like Ms. Goodall and her husband as the next generation of connected devices — TVs and various mobile devices — that have their own data plan or subscription service come to market. The cable TV companies battle the phone companies by bundling cable, landline phone and Internet services, but most wireless carriers do not yet have any programs to bundle the data plans and offer discounts for myriad mobile devices.

Ms. Goodall says she dreads the day when her sons, 1 and 4, get bitten by the texting craze, as her 12-year-old nephew has.

“We’ll probably have to sign our sons up for cellphones even sooner than we’d like because we don’t have a home phone,” she said. “I’m not looking forward to dealing with that set of issues.”

“If you’re looking to ink a deal with a really wealthy individual (there are plenty of wealthy women, but I’ll make this example male, because that’s the universal pronoun), here are five rules to put you way ahead of your competition:

Rule No.1: Respect time.
Everyone knows to arrive early, but here’s what most people don’t know: there may be gatekeepers, but having time to cool your heels in the waiting room for 30 minutes looks sloppy. He’ll just assume you must not be too successful.

Of course it makes sense to allow extra time to get to the meeting, because heaven help you if you’re late. But if you’re very early hang out at the coffee shop across the street, not in the reception area. You should be announcing yourself to the receptionist at precisely the appointed hour.

Once shown in, remember to respect his time, too. If you are scheduled for 10 minutes, 600 seconds from when you walked in you should be doing one of two things: Either walking out, or answering questions. If you are answering questions, acknowledge that your 10 minutes is up and let him know you’re more than happy to answer his question if you can have a few more minutes. He’ll respect you for being a person of your word and will almost certainly allow you a few more minutes.

Rule No.2: Don’t tell him his business.
I don’t care if you’ve been in the same industry for years–you still do not know his unique challenges at the moment. Don’t insult him by announcing how your solution will revolutionize his operation or be just the thing. He may indeed conclude that your product or service is amazing, but that’s for him to decide.

Rule No.3: Give him the facts.
Here’s a great question: “How do you stack up against your competitors?” The answer will tell him volumes.

If you feed him that line about not wanting to bad-mouth competitors, you just blew the sale. This is an excuse salespeople hide behind when they either don’t know their competitors, or they’re worse than their competitors and don’t want to say so.

He’s not asking you to bad-mouth your competitors, he just expects you to know both your own product as well as your competitors’ products. The winning answer will provide him specific details on what your business’ strengths are over your competitors. These details le him know you’re a pro. He might not even read your matrix, but will give it to someone on his staff to decode.

Rule No.4: Take notes.
An ancient Chinese proverb states: “The faintest writing is stronger than the strongest memory.

Unless you have a photographic or phonographic memory, be prepared to take notes on pertinent information or advice given. Don’t make him repeat names, locations, or statistics just because you couldn’t be bothered to write them down.

Taking notes is a show of respect. It also means you need to be told something only once and he can rely on you to know it.

Rule No.5: Anticipate his needs.
This is the flipside of the last rule: Don’t make him take notes to remember what you just told him. When your presentation is finished, leave him with a concise, factual, well-organized document summarizing the information you’ve presented.

In my 40 years in business, I estimate that at most 10 percent of salespeople follow any of these rules. That means an exceedingly small group of people will make a great impression on Mr. Big.”

They say in MLM Direct Sales the faster you can identify your leaders the faster you will have success in MLM Direct Sales. I must admit that I have used techniques I have read in the above mentioned books and just recently two strong leaders have appeared in my organization.  Was that luck or was that preparation on my part  I believe it was a combination of both.  Once you read some of this material you too will see that Building the Right Team for MLM Success Is an Art and a Science at the same time!

While looking for a story to motivate some business associates into taking some positive action in their lives; I faced a dilemma.  They understood the reasons why logically, but just did not have the emotional fire burning inside of them to move into action.  “You can bring a horse to water but you can’t make them drink”.

There are people who talk the talk, but do not feel comfortable walking  the walk.  You may know similar types out there as well.  Great individuals, love them dearly, but just needing that extra…….. eh…. Kick.

They could explain the paint off the side of a house as to why they need to be out there developing alternative streams of income…..  However, they speak with the logical side of their brain.  Now the emotional side of their brain, where passions fury exists, was just not ignited.

Then I came across this short story and read it to a few of them and suddenly the light came on for a few.  I hope this may be of some use to you in igniting the flame in a person near and dear to you.  Igniting the flame that will move them into making that decision, which will change their life forever.

This story was written about 100 years ago, but it is short and to the point.  But most importantly it is very visible and easy to see.  I hope it helps you as much as it help me.

Don’t Quit Direct Sales MLM until you have Nothing Left

Sometimes we all need a little tough love.  It may not be what we want to hear, but it is what we need to hear at that time.  We  can all relate to a parent, teacher, coach or mentor telling us to push, harder, farther, again and again.  I can still hear my old football coach exhorting me on up the “hill” just ONE more time.  I can hear it in myself telling my kids leave it all on the field.  Well in life this applies as well, when we reach that wall, we need someone to just push us a little further.  There is more gas in our tanks, even when we think the tank is on EMPTY….  We can all go just one more LAP……. PUSH and Don’t Stop!

Residual income is the smartest income you can earn. There are other ways to earn an income most people earn Linear Income.

Linear Income is related directly to the amount of work or effort you provide to earn it. (Hours for Dollars) or a sales commission on a sales transaction of some type.  Linear income is what we are used to doing every morning after driving through traffic.  You do “X”, and then a few weeks later they give you “Y”.  In this case “Y” is a paycheck; but it could represent a fee, wage, commission or salary.

Residual income sometimes referred to as passive income; is income that continues to be generated after the initial effort has been expended. A great advantage of residual income is that once things are set in motion, you continue making money from your initial efforts, while gaining time to devote to other things… such as generating more streams of residual income!  See why residual income is good.

There are lots of ways to earn residual income but one way that I have found is through Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)

David Bach, Donald Trump and Rich Dad himself have gone on record saying in this economy get involved in Network Marketing also known as Direct Sales or Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) and learn how to start a business while earning residual income.

It is an inexpensive way to own your own business (usually $500.00 or less).
You can write off your investment and since this is a home based business you can also claim a portion of your mortgage or rent, utilities, the miles you drive and even half of what you pay when you eat out, it is usually less than free, all things considered. Your just lending yourself money until tax time. Make sure you hire a CPA so your taxes are correct.  Luckily my spouse is a CPA.
