Enough Already: 10 Things That Should Sicken You

By: Tonya Pendleton, BlackAmericaWeb.com

There are times when folks just get fed up. And Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards may have been the tipping point. Kanye West’s interrupting 19-year-old country darling Taylor Swift’s speech was absolutely ridiculous, yet he still has his defenders. Fortunately, they are in the minority. Given the saturation of media through social networking, cable and Twitter, a consensus on bad behavior and a smackdown of public opinion can happen fast.
But as bad as Kanye’s antics have become, he’s not the only thing that we’re sick and tired of. As President Barack Obama said recently, there seems to be a coarsening in the way people handle things. Where has civility gone? Don’t we think it’s about time for change to spread further than a political campaign? Here are the top 10 things that we should be sick of by now.

1. Ig’nant behavior. Someone needs to stop these people. Whether its T-Pain walking around, literally, with a big-ass chain, or Slim Thug tweeting about masturbating while watching Beyonce and Alica Keys during the Video Music Awards, Kanye’s trifling rant, or Serena Williams profanity-laced tirade when a foul was called during a match she was already losing, isn’t it time that folks were held accountable for their behavior?
2. Insincere apologies. Kanye West, Serena Williams and Chris Brown should definitely get together to form the How Not to Apologize Club. If you did it and you’re sorry, actually act like it or don’t even bother. Or how about, better still: Try conducting yourself as the professional you’re supposed to be.
3. Celebrity by association. This means you, Amber Rose, and you, Cassie, and you, Kim Kardashian, and you, Nicole Richie. All of the above are famous because of the men they have slept with or the families they were born into. They possess no discernible skills, except the ability to attract famous men, the cachet of their last name, or their skill at choosing and wearing designer clothes on the red carpet. (Okay, Cassie did have one hit record, but we did say no discernible talent, right?) Should not we be teaching our daughters to aspire to achievements in life they can be proud of?
4. Reality TV. You do know that reality TV isn’t reality, right? You do know that the people hired for these shows are often aspiring actors? You do know that homes and cars are rented? You do know that situations are often scripted and that even on the so-called skilled shows, like America’s Next Top Model, Design Star and Project Runway, it’s possible that outcomes and challenges are done ahead of time and determined for dramatic purposes? Yes, Virginia, and Tameka, reality TV is just as fake as anything else you see on TV. It’s not as real as you think.
5. Presidential disrespect. The President of the United States should be addressed as Mr. President or President Obama, not Mr. Obama, as many media outlets still refer to him. A low-ranking member of Congress interrupting a joint session to heckle the president is worthy of official censure, period, no matter who or what race that president is. As was often said during the Bush administration when lies, cover-ups and scandals were going on, you must respect the office. Oh, do tell, when did that change? I thought so.
6. Red carpet fashion on city concrete. You are not Beyonce or Rihanna or Ciara or even Keri Hilson. Therefore, leggings or skin-tight distressed skinny jeans with six-inch heels is not an outfit appropriate for your day job.
7. Skinny jeans on men. Maybe the fellas are confused. Sagging, bagging, showing-your-drawls jeans are now out of style, as are cornrows, Jheri curls, gold teeth and waves created by grease, as opposed to naturally wavy hair. However, that does not mean that in response to the phase-out of sagging pants that men are now OK’ed to wear crotch-hugging skinny jeans. Just. Say. No.
8. Making a big deal of out idiocy. Okay, sure, Kanye acted the fool, and yeah, it was terrible, and we’re tired of ignorant behavior. But, at the end of the day, in the grand scheme of things, aren’t there more important issues that everyone should be outraged about? Domestic violence, poverty, crime, education and child abuse have not been eradicated. How about we pay more attention to fixing those things, and give them more energy than the latest dumb celebrity antic?
9. Award shows. Award shows have completely lost their edge. If someone shot someone onstage, people would probably just think it was a set-up. If Beyonce and Jay-Z started having sex in their seats at an awards show, people probably wouldn’t even blink. Okay, maybe they would, but you know what we mean. The shock and surprise factor is gone at these shows, and there are too many of them anyway. All they have become is a showcase of already-overexposed people getting more and more exposure, while folks who are actually deserving of a little shine never get any. How about we just do the Oscars, The Tonys, the Grammys and the Emmys and call it a day? Here’s an idea: When we want to see music performances on TV, why don’t we call it a concert?
10. TMI. There was once a time when celebs had some mystery. There may have been rumors or gossip about them, but they managed to stay above it, letting fans guess more than they would ever really know. Now via Twitter and cable and TMZ, etc. it seems like we know every detail of celeb lives, from their bowel movements to their current jumpoffs and booty calls. Enough! If we hear one more thing about the Gosselin’s marriage or anyone eles’s, we will scream. Some celebs keep it close  Beyonce and Rihanna being two of the most private. We’ll take more of that, please.
